Is it Major Depression, Anxiety, or Bipolar Disorder?
By Julie Stoneham MSW LCSW
Depression, anxiety, and bipolar all have some similar symptoms making diagnosing them and, treating them complicated. Commonly suffers feel overwhelmed, sad, scared, helpless and, hopeless. It is also common for depression and anxiety to both be presented. Consideration is given to how severe the symptoms are, what has triggered the episodes and, how long the patient has been experiencing the symptoms.
A Licensed Clinical Therapist can accurately diagnose the disorder, treat the symptoms, and help resolve the underlying causes that have triggered the episodes.
According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, (5th ed.; (DSM-5) of the American Psychiatric Association (APA; 2013)
Some symptoms of Bipolar I and II disorder are: (paraphrased)
- Mood swings that can change daily or more frequently.

- Highs that can present as reckless behavior
- Nonstop talking or talking too fast
